And I'm pretty sure about that.
When the bell rings, the animals react. Dogs perk up. Birds startle. Even the cats pause their little schemes.
If the bell rang and nobody noticed, we'd have a village full of the world's calmest wildlife.

Two shells tapping in the right rhythm. A single one rolling in a gutter.
Small sounds become sharp when you're afraid.

It can sound sharper than it should.

Nighttime is mostly crickets and Levi snoring.

Wood does that too.

I hear lots of things at night.
My blanket. My stomach. The wind.
One time I heard a cookie calling my name. Turned out it was just... me. Calling the cookie.
